The neuroscience program at LGMC was named a Center of Excellence in 2012. LGMC is fully equipped to care for victims of a cerebral vascular accident, more commonly known as a stroke.
As an Advanced Primary Care Stroke Center, the Stroke Center at LGMC is featured on the American Stroke Association’s website as a “Stroke Center Near You.” The Stroke Center certification means LGMC has the ability to provide effective, timely care to stroke victims and can significantly improve outcomes for stroke patients. The hospital also offers seizure and headache management services.
LGMC is also home to CyberKnife® Center of Louisiana. CyberKnife robotic radiosurgery is the newest technology to treat tumors in the brain and elsewhere in the body without an incision, pain or anesthesia.
One of the greatest benefits of neurological care at LGMC is its continuum of services that provide a smooth transition from pre-surgery preparation to inpatient recovery. LGMC has a dedicated rehabilitation floor staffed with nurses and therapists. Their sole purpose is to quickly and safely get patients as independent as possible and able to return home. The rehabilitation program includes physical, occupational and speech therapies.
Interventional Neurology is a medical specialty that utilizes advanced imaging equipment to perform minimally invasive procedures to treat complex diseases of the brain, neck and spine. One of the objectives Interventional Neurology at Lafayette General Medical Center is to improve stroke care and to enhance quality of life for stroke survivors. Interventional Neurologists provide a number of treatment options for patients needing alternatives to more invasive surgical procedures. They also offer expanded therapeutic options for individuals who might be ineligible for treatment.
For example, in some cases of ischemic stroke, the Interventional Neurologist could offer lifesaving alternatives. In addition to stroke, Interventional Neurologists could also treat vascular malformations, arteriovenous malformations, vasospasms, aneurysms and tumors.
