The Cancer Center of Acadiana, under Lafayette General Health, has spanned across South Louisiana, bringing closer-to-home, world-renowned cancer treatments normally found at large medical centers in Houston and New Orleans.
Cancer Center of Acadiana (CCA) at Lafayette General is now among the nationally elite group of cancer care providers recognized as an Accredited Cancer Program. In March 2016, the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer granted three-year accreditation to CCA, with commendation and named it a recipient of its Outstanding Achievement Award.
The Cancer Center also benefits from Lafayette General Medical Center‘s status as a Major Teaching Hospital. Residents from LSU’s School of Medicine residency program now rotate through CCA, providing thorough attention and evaluation skills to patients. Studies show that teaching hospitals can offer better care than non-teaching hospitals.
The CoC Accreditation is considered the hallmark of excellence and is awarded to comprehensive cancer care programs that provide high quality, comprehensive and multidisciplinary patient-centered care. Additionally, to earn accreditation, a cancer program must meet 34 CoC quality care standards. These standards include patient access to cancer-related information, education and support. The program must include a cancer registry that collects various data on different cancers, offers lifelong patient follow-up and, most importantly, offers patients quality care close to home.
When patients receive care at an accredited cancer facilities such as Cancer Center of Acadiana, they have access to an onsite laboratory and radiological testing, prevention and early detection. New treatments, genetic counseling and several patient-centered services are also available.
The multidisciplinary team of experienced professionals at CCA includes oncologists, oncology nurses, a dietician, genetic counselor, patient educator, patient navigator and social worker. A medical psychologist is also part of the multidisciplinary team of experienced cancer professionals.
CCA opened its doors at Lafayette General Medical Center on July 6, 2010 and has been designated a comprehensive community cancer program since 2012. In addition to clinical services, CCA at Lafayette General boasts one of the largest infusion centers in Louisiana, with satellite locations in Abbeville, Crowley, Eunice, Opelousas and New Iberia.
