St. Martin Hospital holds Groundbreaking Ceremony
BREAUX BRIDGE – St. Martin
Hospital held a groundbreaking ceremony on its hospital grounds Friday, August
17 to formally kick off a significant expansion of the facility. Hospital officials and Chamber of Commerce
members were on hand for the ceremonial start of the expansion project. After completion, expected by June
2013, St. Martin Hospital will feature a new Outpatient area to include
a designated entrance and registration area, with larger, updated laboratory
and radiology departments.
St. Martin Hospital CEO/VP
Katie Hebert says there are also plans to enlarge the Emergency Department to
include more exam rooms, a fast track area and a larger waiting room. "We will be adding about 6,000 sq. ft.
to the facility and remodeling about 5,000 sq. ft.,” says Hebert.
St. Martin Hospital has been in partnership with Lafayette General
Medical Center since 2000, with full ownership occurring in 2009. Hebert says that the transition in
ownership grants the hospital opportunities that otherwise would not be
available. "We
have recruited an OB/GYN to provide women’s services in our parish; we have
completed a remodeling project earlier in the year; and we have plans to open a
family practice clinic in St. Martinville in 2013,” she says. Hebert also adds that the Cardiovascular
Institute of the South at Lafayette General recently opened an office on the Breaux
Bridge campus providing vital heart services to residents. Other Lafayette specialists are expected
to come to the area as the hospital expands.
