Lafayette General Medical Center Acquires Second da Vinci Robot - 12/31/2007 -

Minimally Invasive Procedures Outpace Expectations—To keep pace with patient demand, Lafayette General Medical Center has acquired a second da Vinci robot at a cost of $1.65 million. The surgical system arrived December 18, about eight months after the purchase of the first one.

“As the only hospital in Louisiana to offer all three surgical specialties—gynecology, urology and cardiovascular/thoracic surgery—our surgery schedule was becoming increasingly hectic,” said Al Patin, director of cardiology and operative services at LGMC. “The two systems will add efficiencies to the operating room schedule, as well as allow us to accommodate the growing demand. One robot will be devoted to hysterectomies and prostatectomies and the other to the 13 different cardiac procedures performed by Dr. Bruce Jones.”

Lafayette General performed its first da Vinci surgery on April 9, 2007—a prostatectomy by Drs. William B. Roth and Samuel Shuffler, urologists. The arrival of Dr. Bruce Jones, cardiovascular/thoracic surgeon, in September of this year brought the surgical case volume over first year projections.

“We exceeded our year one projections in just eight months,” said Patrick Gandy, Lafayette General interim chief executive officer. “I expect the biggest increase to come in cardiovascular procedures, as the capabilities of Dr. Jones and minimally invasive heart surgery become more well-known; but we also expect steady growth in urologic and gynecologic procedures.”

“If you need a mitral valve repair or a single coronary artery bypass surgery, and you want to avoid splitting your breastbone, then Lafayette General is the place to have the surgery,” said Patin. “Not only do we have the equipment and a highly trained staff, but Dr. Jones is an expert. He has performed about 200 heart cases using da Vinci thus far in his career. “
