Lafayette General recently ended its annual United Way campaign, and is proud to announce the totals. One of the main goals this year was to increase the number of 'fair share givers', or those employees who give one hour's wage per month for the year. That goal was met—and then some—with the total number of fair share givers increasing by almost 200%!
To increase interest and participation, this year's United Way committee decided to pursue some new activities. Employees were invited to form teams to participate in the first hospital-wide gumbo cook-off, held on the afternoon of Halloween. Twelve teams competed to be crowned the gumbo champion, and staff members from all over the hospital paid $5.00, or made a fair share gift, to sample the unique gumbo creations and enjoy music and camaraderie in the Burdin Riehl parking tower.
In addition, departments were encouraged to participate in a costume contest—the entry fee, or donation, would serve as a ticket for all to attend the Gumbo Cook-off as well.
It appears that, by popular demand, the Gumbo Cook-off will be a new tradition. The total 2008 LGMC United Way Campaign Gift is $68,015.37.
