Heart Month Activities: All About Prevention - 1/29/2009 -

Though heart disease affects one in four Americans, there are steps you can take to lower your risk. Prevention, through healthy lifestyle and regular screenings, is key. But even if heart disease has set in, you can take steps to reverse some of the damage.  Following are upcoming FREE events & screenings during the month:

Wednesday, February 4
Women &  Heart Disease
6 p.m. • Owen Auditorium

Dr. Charles Mayes,  cardiologist, will discuss  how heart disease impacts women differently than men, with specific strategies  for prevention.   FREE blood pressure  screening.  

Tuesday, February 10
Know Your Numbers: blood pressure, cholesterol, blood  glucose, and BMI
12 noon • Owen Auditorium

A panel of LGMC experts will discuss the importance of keeping these  numbers in check to lower your risk  of heart disease.   Coupons for FREE cholesterol and blood glucose screening will be  given to first 50 who RSVP.  Also, blood pressure and body  composition checks at  the seminar.

Wednesday, February 18
Peripheral Vascular  Disease (PVD)
6 p.m. • Owen Auditorium

Dr. Chris LaGraize,  vascular surgeon,  will talk about PVD  symptoms, screening  and treatment, as well  as the connection between PVD and heart disease.  Coupons for FREE  PVD screening to first 20 who RSVP.

Friday, February 27
Heart Healthy Cooking  Demonstration
12 noon • Owen Auditorium

Dietitians and LGMC’s  chef will prepare a  heart-healthy meal,  and share tips to use at home for a healthier lifestyle. Focus on seafood for  those observing Lent.
