Lafayette General sets the standard for high quality care in services most frequently utilized by the elderly, whether that's through our Physical Rehabilitation Unit, Home Health services, Skilled Nursing Facility, Cardiac Rehabilitation program or nursing home setting. But we also go a step further to keep older adults healthy even before they turn to us for medical attention. We do that through significant educational and travel opportunities, support groups, periodic health screenings and other programs designed especially for older adults.

Many people age 50 and older choose to join Horizons, a free membership program extended through LGMC's Office of Older Adult Services. Membership places interested persons on a mailing list for a quarterly schedule of events that includes classes on aging and health-related topics, as well as leisure time activities.

We offer all this with older adults in mind:

• Monthly defensive driving classes held in conjunction with AARP's 55 Alive Program;

• Life Writing classes in collaboration with the university;

• An information and referral line (289-8516 or 1-800-737-7669 outside of Lafayette Parish) for questions about health or community services;

• Group tours, ranging from one-day excursions to extended trips all over North America;

• Free blood pressure and weight checks any weekday in our Wellness Center;

• October immunization clinics for flu and pneumonia;

• Free Diabetes education;

• A Friends in Deed Volunteer program; and

• Advanced Medical Supplies and Services.

We also have programs for widowed persons and family caregivers of frail elders. Our Widowed Persons Service is open to widowed men and women of all ages. Regular meetings, the "New Life, New Ways" series and social events are designed to assist the widowed in his/her transition to a new way of life. Giving Care is an education and support group for caregivers of the frail elderly. A support group for families of persons with Alzheimer's disease is also offered.  Our Aging Resource Center has brochures, books, and videotapes on aging and loss related topics.

For additional information on any of these services, call the LGMC Office of Older Adult Services at (337) 289-8516 or check out our Calendar of Events on this website.
