In Skilled Hands

Many of our Lafayette General Health employees are multi-talented. In addition to the skills they use to provide the very best healthcare to our patients, they also create beautiful things in their own time. Lafayette General Foundation hosts an annual art auction and event featuring artistic works by physicians and employees of Lafayette General Health in honor of National Physician's Day.

Thursday, March 2, 2017  •  Acadiana Center for the Arts  •  Lafayette  •  6 - 9 p.m.

A thank you goes out to everyone who made the 2017 "In Skilled Hands" event a success. Physicians, employees and other friends of the health system produced and donated 50 items for this auction. Pieces included paintings, woodcarvings, jewelry and other items, such as vacation getaways, and much more.

  2017 Honorees:

Dr. Bradley J. Chastant

A native of Lafayette, LA, Dr. Chastant has been practicing medicine since 1988. A pioneer in his field, Chastant has had a hand in bringing many medical firsts to Acadiana. A firm believer in plastic surgery as an essential tool in delicate reconstructive procedures, Chastant has also provided a guiding hand to medical students across the state.

Dr. Chastant donated a hand spun “Spalted Pelican Wood Bowl” to be auctioned off during the event. It’s made of indigenous wood from a tree that fell during the historic flood in August of 2016. The piece is infused with raised epoxy with crystallized glass and included a hand carved maple stand. This work showcases just how talented these physicians are both on and off the clock. Thank you Dr. Chastant!

Dr. Philip Gachassin

A native of Lafayette, LA, he’s changed the way patients think of weight loss surgery in Acadiana. He had a hand in launching Lafayette General Medical Center’s bariatric surgery program in 2004 and has been performing weight loss surgeries for over a decade. His patient-focused, minimally invasive techniques have set a precedent for advanced, general and bariatric surgery here in Lafayette.

For touching the lives of so many, thank you Dr. Gachassin!

Dr. Jeffrey Joseph

A native of Crowley, LA, Dr. Jeffrey Joseph’s steady hand has put faces, and lives, back together since 1993. Even early in his career, Dr. Joseph set a standard of excellence in his field, co-authoring “Uniform Rhinoplastic Documentation” which is still widely used today. Dr. Joseph prides himself on his work with patients who’ve suffered traumatic injuries or illnesses.

Dr. Joseph’s steady hands also helped to create a beautiful painting of Carousel Bar & Lounge inside the Hotel Monteleone. Thank you to Dr. Joseph and to all of those who donated their time and hard work to make In Skilled Hands possible!

Dr. Juan Perez-Luis

A native of Puerto Rico, Dr. Juan Perez-Ruiz moved to Lafayette in 1996 and was appointed to Lafayette General’s Medical Staff in 1998. Serving in many leadership roles within Lafayette General Medical Center, Dr. Perez treats his staff and his patients like family. He’s also lent the Foundation a hand by providing several oil paintings to auction off during various Foundation events. Thank you Dr. Perez!

Dr. Donald West

Born in Palestine, TX, Dr. West has spent over three decades practicing anatomic and clinic pathology at Lafayette General Medical Center and other area hospitals. During that time, he’s been behind many medical advancements in the area, offering some of the first “cancer center” level services in Acadiana. By getting his hands on new technology, Dr. West has helped shape how cancer is diagnosed and treated at LGMC.
