Judy Ames

One Sunday morning, Judy Ames, RN, Pediatrics, made a phone
call to follow up on a discharged patient. As patient call monitor, she asked
the mom how the child was doing and she soon surmised that the patient was
displaying symptoms not normal to recuperation. The mom said that she was going
to call the doctor on Monday for an appointment. However, Judy sensed the seriousness
of the symptoms and urged the mom to not wait, but to call the physician
immediately. Which she did. Hearing the child’s symptoms, the doctor directed
the mom to the emergency department.
Soon after, the patient was re-admitted to Pediatrics and taken into
surgery that same day for debridement, later going home with a wound vac. Judy
demonstrated keen observations and the importance of follow up calls to check
on patients. Her persistence in getting the mom to act more immediately made
the difference between a critical situation and a manageable one.
