U.S. Rep. Cassidy visits with Lafayette General officials
U.S. Representative Bill Cassidy (R – 6th Dist.) stopped by Lafayette General Medical Center (LGMC) on Friday, August 16 for a discussion with hospital officials about the status of health care in America. Lafayette General Health (LGH) President/CEO David L. Callecod, FACHE, gave Rep. Cassidy a walking tour of the hospital while discussing issues and answering questions.
Callecod discussed future initiatives of Lafayette General Health. Cassidy said he was excited to learn more about LGH and its accountable care organization model.
Cassidy is currently seeking the U.S. Senate seat, currently occupied by Democrat Mary Landrieu, up for election in 2014.
Rep. Cassidy spoke to LGH board members and administration about the risks associated with the Affordable Care Act. He also talked about a little-known drug-pricing program (340B). Rep. Cassidy learned how LGH uses the 340B program and then praised the health system's strategy for, and implementation of, 340B.
Cassidy is well versed in the medical field as a practicing physician in the public hospital system. He was a graduate and teacher of medicine at LSU Medical School. He continues to see patients at LSU Clinics, and his wife, Laura, is also a retired breast cancer surgeon.
After a tour of LGMC's Intensive Care Unit and patient rooms, Cassidy took questions from local television stations.
Upon conclusion, he stated the visit "exceeded my expectations."
