LGMC Offers Free Stroke Screenings on November 8

A stroke happens every four seconds in the U.S., according to the American Stroke Association. Experts say it is the fourth cause of death in America. Lafayette General Medical Center is giving patients a fighting chance against those odds with a free stroke screening on Saturday, November 8.

This second annual event is scheduled from 7:30 a.m. to noon on the second floor of the Burdin Riehl Center, across from the hospital. Physicians from Neuroscience Center of Acadiana at Lafayette General will be on hand with stroke risk assessments. LGMC staff members will be conducting carotid-artery screenings read by a physician from Cardiovascular Institute of the South at Lafayette General. Additionally, there will be total cholesterol and diabetic screenings, blood pressure and heart rate checks.

Neurologists at Neuroscience Center of Acadiana say that certain lifestyle habits and risk factors, some hereditary, increase the chance of stroke. It is important for patients to be aware of their risks and control or treat them; that is the purpose of the community screenings.

Fasting is recommended for the screenings, but not required. Patients should not skip their medications.

To attend Lafayette General’s free stroke screenings, appointments are required by calling (337) 289-8600. The number of screenings is limited.
