LGMC Offering More Precise Hip and Knee Surgeries with MAKOplasty
Lafayette General Medical Center (LGMC) is the first hospital in Acadiana, and only the third in Louisiana, to offer MAKOplasty®, a minimally invasive treatment for adults suffering from early to mid-stage osteoarthritis. Using a highly advanced, surgeon-controlled robotic system, MAKO enables ultra-precise alignment and placement of implants in partial knee and total hip replacement procedures. The Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopedic System (RIO) makes it less invasive than traditional surgery, which helps improve outcomes.
The RIO System uses CT scans of each patient’s hip or knee to assist surgeons in pre-planning their surgery. During surgery, a robotic arm uses computer-guided mapping software, similar to GPS, integrated into the surgical instruments to ensure exactness, within 0.2 mm accuracy. This gives each patient a surgery tailored to his or her individual physical makeup.
MAKO partial resurfacing is a vital option for younger adults suffering from knee pain, whose doctors often discourage full replacement. Other types of partial knee replacements have shown to be ineffective or problematic. The MAKO procedure gives patients a quick-recovery alternative that can eliminate years of prolonged pain until full replacement surgery becomes necessary.
The assistance of this machine allows a surgeon to be so meticulous that the replacement lasts much longer than before. The implant experiences less wear and friction. This makes partial replacement viable for people of younger ages, and makes fewer replacements necessary for elderly patients. Ultimately, it means more pain-free living for patients of all ages.

The end result is less pain, less invasive surgery and shorter recovery time,” he says. “The patient is back to normal activity quicker.”
During MAKOplasty Total Hip Replacement surgery, RIO provides visualization of the joint and biomechanical data to guide the bone preparation and implant positioning to match the pre-surgical plan. After first preparing the femur or thighbone, the surgeon uses the robotic arm to accurately ream and shape the acetabulum socket in the hip, and then implant the cup at the correct depth and orientation. The surgeon then implants the femoral implant. MAKOplasty offers the confidence of more accurate cup placement and accurate leg length restoration, which significantly reduces the likelihood of hip dislocation.
