LGMC Designated Level 2 WellSpot
Well-Ahead Louisiana officially designated Lafayette General Medical Center (LGMC) with Level 2 WellSpot status on April 20. Well-Ahead Louisiana is an initiative started by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) aimed at improving the health and wellness of Louisiana citizens. LGMC previously had Level 3 designation, but this year satisfied more criteria to improve its status.
LGMC received the Level 2 designation after meeting Well-Ahead initiative requirements, such as having healthy dining options available and a tobacco-free campus. LGMC is a 5-2-1-0 Partner, an evidence-based nutrition program that promotes 5 or more fruits and vegetables per day; 2 or fewer hours of recreational screen time per day; 1 or more hour of physical activity per day; and 0 soda or sweetened beverages per day.
LGMC also met the criteria of the LA Business Group on Health Worksite Wellness Toolkit. Those steps include having a Worksite Wellness Committee, Worksite/Employee Assessments and a designated staff person to lead the program.
Being a GIFT (Guided Infant Feeding Techniques) Center also satisfied additional requirements by implementing “The Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.” LGMC staffs three internationally certified lactation consultants, three certified lactation counselors, as well as nurses trained as breastfeeding educators.
“This is a tremendous achievement,” says LGMC CEO Patrick W. Gandy, Jr. “This designation is a signal to the public that we are a leader in improving the health of our community. It is a reflection of the patient-centered culture we’ve worked so hard to establish here, and I’m proud that it is being recognized,” he says.
Well-Ahead Louisiana promotes voluntary changes without imposing new taxes or creating new rules. The initiative is designed to help Louisiana's people, leaders, businesses and organizations take action because it is the right – and healthy – thing to do.
