LGMC and LGSW Named One of America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Safety

4/26/2017

Women’s Choice Award® has named Lafayette General Medical Center (LGMC) and Lafayette General Southwest (LGSW) two of America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Safety.  This evidence-based designation is the only award that identifies the country’s best healthcare facilities based on robust criteria that consider female patient satisfaction, clinical excellence and what women say they want from a hospital.

LGMC and LGSW are the only two hospitals in Acadiana to receive this award.  The list of over 451 award winners represents hospitals that have met the highest standards for patient safety in the U.S.  The award signifies LGMC and LGSW are in the top 15% of 3,005 U.S. hospitals for patient safety.

“Our staff continues to amaze us with their commitment to patient care through their compassion, character and skill,” says Patrick Gandy, CEO of Lafayette General Medical Center.  “We are grateful for their diligent work and the way they dedicate themselves to every patient, all day, every day in order to achieve our mission To Restore, Maintain and Improve Health.”

The methodology used to select LGMC and LGSW as two of America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Safety is unique in that it evaluates complication and infection incident rates, Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey results, along with primary research about women’s healthcare preferences.

To receive the award, hospitals must also use an Inpatient Safe Surgery Checklist to assess effective communication and safe practices during three perioperative periods: prior to administration of anesthesia; prior to skin incision; and prior to the patient leaving the operating room or procedural area.

“The recipients of the America’s Best Hospitals for Patient Safety award have led the country by implementing safe practices that have ultimately saved lives,” said Delia Passi, founder and CEO of the Women’s Choice Award. “This recognition is critical for women as they make 80% of healthcare decisions and need to know they are putting themselves—and their family members—in safe hands.”
