Free Colon Screening Kits During February
KLFY: A Test For Life, Part I
KLFY: A Test For Life, Part II
KLFY: A Test For Life, Part IV
Lafayette General Endoscopy Center (LGEC) along with Good Neighbor Pharmacies and KLFY TV 10 are joining together to raise awareness in the fight against colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is the second most deadliest cancer in the United States; however, if detected early enough it has a 90% cure rate. Following appropriate screening guidelines is the key to detecting the polyps that become cancerous.
Beginning February 1, through February 28,
Good Neighbor Pharmacies
will be handing out FREE, simple-to-use, home screening test kits. Once you have performed the test at home, mail it to Lafayette General Endoscopy Center in the self-addressed envelope provided.
Colorectal Cancer Symptoms
It is important that anyone at any age who has symptoms of colorectal cancer be fully evaluated with a colonoscopy to rule out cancer. Watching and waiting is not an acceptable option.
Remember that colorectal cancer can be present without any symptoms at all, so screening is important to find cancer early when it is most treatable.
Symptoms can include:
A change in bowel habits — constipation or diarrhea that lasts more than a couple of weeks.
A feeling that the bowel does not empty completely.
Bright red or very dark blood in the stool, black stools that may indicate hidden blood.
Stools that look narrower or thinner than normal.
Abdominal discomfort such as frequent gas pains, bloating, fullness, or cramps.
Weight loss with no known explanation.
Constant tiredness or fatigue.
Unexplained anemia (low number of red blood cells).
Lafayette General Endoscopy Center is a partnership with Lafayette General Medical Center and gastroenterologists, Drs. Stephen Abshire, James Arterburn, and Jacque Noel, III. LGEC is located at 1211 Coolidge Boulevard, in the Burdin Riehl Medical Office Building, Suite 302.
