Donna Marcantel, RN from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, recently held a baby shower for a couple with a newborn in NICU. The baby is over two months old, and his mother has had severe health problems since the birth, requiring her to be in the hospital for over 90% of her new baby’s life. This included several stays in the Intensive Care Unit and constant dialysis treatment. This mother was an active and healthy person in her mid-20s before the birth, and the delivery of her son negatively impacted her health to an extreme. The baby’s father is an active parent in the NICU, despite working two jobs. He visits frequently, even "Skyping” from the NICU to the mother’s hospital bed so she can see and visit her baby. The newborn is close to discharge and doing well. Donna gathered a collection of money and shopped for gifts herself to put together the baby shower. The parents were very grateful and surprised. Going above and beyond her daily job, Donna embodies the "Making a Difference” behavior that LGMC encourages.
