A letter to the CEO received September 14, 2011:

Dear Mr. Callecod,

My father, Lynnwood Roy, was recently a patient at Lafayette General and I wanted to tell you a story.

We thought my father was going to be discharged the day after he was admitted to the hospital. I knew that he would be receiving a delivery and thought it might arrive after he left the hospital. I stopped at the registration desk to ask what happens to deliveries when they arrive after the patient is discharged. Cafey Hunter was standing in front of the desk talking to a co worker. I don't really know if she works in or near that area. She stopped talking, introduced herself, and asked how she could help me. I asked my question about the delivery and she said, "I really don't know, but I'll call you with the answer." I told her not to worry, that I would just ask someone else if it did not arrive before we left the hospital. She insisted on finding out the answer and took my name and phone number.

Often times, we never know what others are thinking or feeling, but Cafey sincerely wanted to help me. Cafey called me less than an hour later with the answer, but she probably did not know that the delivery had already arrived. What Cafey really did not know is that my father was diagnosed with stage four lung and liver cancer that morning and, at that moment, it was more important to me that my dad receive the chocolate covered strawberries than any tests or medicine that he would receive in the next few hours or days. She did not know that he stayed in the hospital 2 more days so the strawberries really were not at risk for being lost. She did not know how sad and scared I was and she did not know the answer to my question at first.

I would like Cafey to know that she made a difference to me that day and I will always be grateful.
